General Test taking tips for reading (Do what works best for you!)
  • Read all the directions thoroughly
  • Read the text carefully, and do not skim (Some sources say skim first and look for key words and phrases in the topic sentences of the paragraphs).
  • Reread the question carefully, if necessary.
  • If helpful, put the question in your own words. Look for key words in the question that you can scan for in the paragraphs.  If there is a number in the question, it will be easy to find.
  • Some people find it helpful, after reading the question, to think of the correct answer before reading the answer choices.
  • Read all the answer choices before selecting your answer.
  • If you don’t know an answer, eliminate those you know are wrong, and make a good guess.
  • If time allows, look back in the text if you are not sure of an answer. (Some sources say you should read the questions first and look back in the passage to see if you can find the answers.
  • Change your answers only if you are absolutely sure you made a mistake.
  • Do not leave any questions unanswered; there is no penalty for guessing.
