Preliminary Steps

It is important for you to contact and discus your idea with several key individuals upon identifying an RFP of interest.

The Director of Research and Sponsored Programs. Regardless of the funding agency, you must let the ORSP know that you plan to apply.  Kindly email the Director of the ORSP with a brief message introducing yourself and your project. Please append the Grant Initiation Form.  This short form encompasses details that will allow the ORSP to route your proposal through the appropriate approval agencies at Marian University such that the submission process goes smoothly.

Endorsements.  Your Program Chair and Dean must be informed as it is likely that your proposal will impact your school and contractual obligations.  These administrators will help perform a cost/benefit analysis to assess the importance of your study, how it will impact your appointment, the likelihood of funding and other important considerations BEFORE you invest time and effort into the writing of the grant. Your Program Chair and Dean may also refer you to others on campus who may assist in issues such as IRB review, the use of animals, potential conflicts of interest, off-campus work, subcontracting, space rental, staff additions, consultants, equipment purchase, biological hazards, proprietary material, cost sharing, and many other matters.  You must receive signed endorsements or your grant will not be submitted through Marian University.  A signed form with (or without) Consent to Proceed will be sent to your email following review of the Grant Initiation Form by Administration.

Other Routing.  Once you get the "green light" to proceed writing your narrative bear in mind that there are usually supporting documents and assurances that are required.  These include mandatory review and approval of your budget by the Provost, Business Office, letters of support, and other inclusions.  The ORSP will assist you in keeping your proposal moving through the checkpoints so that you can submit your grant on time and that the submission process goes smoothly.
