Purpose of the Marian Cares Team
The Marian Cares Team is a collaborative committee of university officials who provide a proactive and supportive “first alert” multidisciplinary team approach to prevention, assessment and intervention of individuals who may pose a threat to the safety and wellbeing of the university community. The Marian Cares Team helps to prevent individuals from harming themselves or others, and generally assists persons in need.
Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to refer important but not life threatening student behavioral concerns via the Marian Cares Form.

Behavior of students that disrupts the mission and/or learning environment of Marian University students, faculty, or staff or the outside community.
Concerning student behavior examples include:
- Behavior that demonstrates a pattern which could potentially threaten the health and well-being of those around him/her such as verbal threats and overly agitated, aggressive, and intimidating behaviors.
- Behavior that makes those around them uncomfortable on some level such as persistent lack of respect, bizarre behavior, or (other behavioral concerns).
- Behavior that makes it difficult for routine (work or teaching) to take place including high levels of irritability, unruliness, interruptive and argumentative modes of communication, and frequent noncompliance (with instructor/staff directives).
- Behavior that negatively affects academic progress.
- Student email, written assignments and/or social network responses that seem to be off topic and cause significant concern or worry including expressions of hate, preoccupation with death, comments regarding violence to self or others, and vulgar language.

Threatening student behavior examples include:
- Extreme shifts of behavior, depression, and/or anxiety issues.
- Suicidal thoughts or expressions, self-mutilating behaviors, and alcohol or drug abuse concerns.
- An inability to communicate in a clear and reality-based manner.
- A marked change in hygiene, class attendance/performance, or personality characteristics.
Program Deans and faculty who develop a student behavioral plan to address classroom disruptions are encouraged to complete the Marian Cares form and share the student behavioral plan with members of the Marian Cares Intervention Team.
